He was the 11th child and 4th son born to the couple

William Samuel and Elizabeth had moved their family from southern Illinois and resettled in Laclede County Missouri by 1850.

WILLIAM H and NANCY ANN CALDWELL were married on April 19, 1862 at Waynesville in Laclede County MO. They had five children before his death in 1880.

Flag CSA Civil WarWILLIAM H McGINNIS enlisted on July 1, 1862 at Lebanon, MO. He fought as a private with Company G of the 21st Missouri Infantry Regiment (Captain Blackburn’s Volunteers) until he was released on April 29, 1864 at Alexandria LA. Afterward he re-enlisted and fought with the 24th Missouri until August 26, 1865. He was wounded at least twice and suffered a back injury which later resulted in his being declared an invalid. Find-A-Grave entry #28422926 by Lindan S Caldwell offers complete details. He is buried at Myrtle Cemetery in Oregon County.

Their first child, Clarinda Elizabeth McGinnis was born on May 1, 1863 in Laclede County MO. She married George Leopolian Young on March 20, 1881 in Oregon County MO.

Their second child, John W McGinnis was born ca 1867 in Missouri. He married Mary J LNU ca 1898.

Their third child, James Francis McGinnis was born on December 27, 1868 in Missouri. He married Nora Burton Howard on December 29, 1889 in Oregon County MO.

Their fourth child, George L McGinnis was born to William H and Nancy Caldwell on January 28, 1871 in Laclede or Pulaski County MO. He died in 1899 in Oregon County MO at age 28. No marriage noted.

Their fifth and last child, Martha Jane McGinnis was born on January 3, 1876 at Myrtle in Knox County MO. ‘Jennie’ married Oscar L Adams ca 1894.

WILLIAM H McGINNIS, 38 y/o h/o Nancy Ann Caldwell, s/o William Samuel and Elizabeth Percy McGinnis, died on February 16, 1880 at Billmore in Oregon County MO as a result of wounds and injuries suffered during the Civil War.

Daughter, 18 y/o Clarinda Elizabeth McGinnis married George Leopolian Young on March 20, 1881 in Oregon County MO. They had 4 children between 1882 and 1896.

Granddaughter, Nancy Jane Young was born to George and Clarinda McGinnis on January 28, 1882 in Randolph County AR. Nancy Jane married William Wesley Looney on October 25, 1900. They had one child before his death in 1903. She married Levi G Goins ca 1905.

Grandson, James Thomas Young was born to George and Clarinda McGinnis on July 24, 1888 in Oregon County MO.  He married Anna Martha Best on January 23, 1910 at Myrtle in Oregon County.

Son, 21 y/o James Francis McGinnis married Nora Burton Howard on December 29, 1889 in Oregon County MO. They had 2 children.

Daughter, Martha Jane McGinnis (Jennie) married Oscar L Adams ca 1894. Oscar and ‘Jennie’ had 10 children between 1895 and 1907.

Granddaughter Nova N Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane McGinnis on September 9, 1895 in Oregon County MO. She married Asa Lee Carroll on January 11, 1919 in Randolph County AR.

Granddaughter, Mamie Young was born to George and Clarinda McGinnis ca 1896 in Missouri. Nothing further found.

Granddaughter, Nora N Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis in July 1897 in Oregon County MO. Nora died in 1919 at age 21. No marriage noted.

Son, 31 y/o John W McGinnis married Mary J LNU ca 1898. They had one child.

Grandson, Leahmon George McGinnis was born to John W and Mary J LNU on April 27, 1898 in Missouri. He was married to Eula B Stone by 1930.

Grandson, Oliver N Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis ca 1898 in Missouri. Nothing further found.

Granddaughter, 18 y/o Nancy Jane Young, d/o George and Clarinda McGinnis, married William Wesley Looney on October 25, 1900. They had one child before his death in 1903.

Granddaughter, Bessie May Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis on April 8, 1900 in Oregon County MO.  She married Charles Earl Ward on April 18, 1917 in Gallatin County, Montana. Twin to Odessa.

Granddaughter, Ceil L/Cecil Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis ca 1901. Nothing further found. Possible twin to Coy Lafayette

Grandson, Coy Lafayette Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis on January 7, 1901. Coy married Elsie Jane Landis ca 1921.

Great-granddaughter, Ella Looney was born to William and Nancy Jane Young on December 31, 1902 in Missouri. She married Shelby L Dotson on October 2, 1921 at Alton MO. They had one child.

Granddaughter, Edna Novella McGinnis was born to James Francis and Nora Burton Howard on December 30, 1902. She married Charles Henry Butler ca 1918.

Granddaughter, Roxie Clara Ella Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis on February 7, 1903 in Oregon County MO. Roxie married Anthony George Grable on December 3, 1933. Children, if any, are not noted.

Granddaughter and widow, 21 y/o Nancy Jane Young Looney, d/o George and Clarinda McGinnis, married Levi G Goins ca 1905. They had 5 children between 1904 and 1923.

Great-granddaughter, Vercie Goins was born to Levi and Nancy Jane Young on December 14, 1905 in Missouri. Vercie married Leamon H Brewer ca 1926 (1 child) and Homer Lee Williams on August 18, 1936 in Butler County MO (2 children).

Grandson, Oakley Noel Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis on February 23, 1905 in Oregon County MO. He married Allie Fay Grable ca 1928.

Granddaughter, Charlotta Adams was born to Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis on February 14, 1907 in Oregon County MO. She married William Volney Grable ca 1936 and Oliver M Williams on February 2, 1938. She was the last child for the couple.

Grandson, James Thomas Young s/o George and Clarinda McGinnis married Anna Martha Best on January 23, 1910 at Myrtle in Oregon County. They had two sons.

Great-granddaughter, Beulah Goins was born to Levi and Nancy Jane Young on May 8, 1912. She married Rufus D Reynolds on July 15, 1928 in Randolph County AR and Daniel Webster Hopper on an unknown date (1 child).

Great-grandson, Phillip Young was born to James Thomas and Anna Best on February 23, 1914 in Oregon County MO. He died on September 12, 1936 in Pemiscot County MO at age 22.

Great-granddaughter, Alta Marie Goins was born to Levi and Nancy Jane Young in August 14, 1915 in Oregon County MO. She married Amos James on November 5, 1941 at Alton MO. Two children are listed in her Find-A-Grave entry #8497060.

Grandson, Clyde C McGinnis was born on July 2, 1915 and adopted by James Francis and Nora Burton Howard McGinnis. Nothing further found.

Great-grandson, Henry Donald Goins was born to Levi and Nancy Jane Young on April 8, 1917 in Missouri. ‘Don’ married Margaret LNU ca 1938. One child counted in 1940 census for Oregon County MO. WWII Veteran

Granddaughter, 17 y/o Bessie May Adams d/o Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis married Charles Earl Ward on April 18, 1917 in Gallatin County, Montana. They had 2 children.

Granddaughter, 16 y/o Edna Novella McGinnis d/o James Francis and Nora Burton Howard married Charles Henry Butler ca 1918. They had two children.

Granddaughter Nova N Adams d/o Oscar and Martha Jane McGinnis married Asa Lee Carroll on January 11, 1919 in Randolph County AR. No children noted. She died on October 26, 1919 in Randolph County at age 24.

Great-grandson, Virgil Earl Ward was born to Charles and Bessie May Adams on June 8, 1920 in Gallatin County MT. He married Carolyn Luella Bradley on September 4, 1941 at Bozeman in Gallatin County. One daughter noted.

Grandson, 20 y/o Coy Lafayette Adams s/o Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) married Elsie Jane Landis ca 1921. Coy and Janie had 9 children, including 4 who were born after 1933 who are not listed for privacy reasons.

Great-grandson, Clifton James Young was born to James Thomas and Anna Best on October 29, 1922 in Oregon County MO. He married Opal Macklay on August 30, 1947 at Mammoth Spring in Fulton County AR. Two children noted.

Great-grandson: Coy Lafayette and Elsie Jane Landis suffered the loss of their first child, a stillborn baby boy in 1922.

Great-grandson, George Ronald Goins (‘Ron’) was born to Levi and Nancy Jane Young on July 20, 1923 in Oregon County MO. His Find-A-Grave entry #25179837 indicates that he married twice: Joanna Black before 1949 and Stella LNU. No children noted. The Find-A-Grave entry also states that his mother was Versie Goins although he appears as a son of Levi and Nancy on their master list in ancestry.com.  Career Veteran

Great-grandson, Charles Walter Rhea was born to R P and Odessa Adams ca 1925. Little Charles died that same year.

Great-grandson, Clifford Joseph Adams was born to Coy Lafayette and Elsie Landis on March 12, 1925 in Oregon County MO. He married Anna June Blankenship on July 19, 1947 at Independence in Jackson County MO (1 child) After her death in 1953, he married Betty L Tennill on March 16, 1954 at Kansas City in Jackson County MO.

Great-grandson, Willard Alvin Adams was born to Coy Lafayette and Elsie Landis on January 21, 1927 in Oregon County MO. He married Woodie V Nolan on November 26, 1949 at Alton in Oregon County. Children, if any, are not noted for privacy reasons.

Grandson, 23 y/o Oakley Noel Adams s/o Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis married Allie Fay Grable ca 1928. They had two children by the 1940 census for Myrtle in Oregon County MO.

Great-granddaughter, Kathleen Frieda Adams was born to Oakley Noel and Allie Fay Grable on May 20, 1928. She married Jack D Powels on an unknown date. No children noted.  Korean War Veteran.

Grandson, Leahmon George McGinnis s/o John W and Mary J LNU was married to Eula B Stone by 1930. No children found. He became a dentist.

Great-grandson, Claude Loyd Adams was born to Coy Lafayette and Elsie Landis on January 28, 1930 in Oregon County MO. No marriage noted.

Great-granddaughter, Bette Lovene Ward was born to Charles and Bessie May Adams on November 12, 1932 in Gallatin County MT. She married Orland Smith on an unknown date. No children noted.

Great-grandson, John R Adams was born to Coy Lafayette and Elsie Landis on January 23, 1933 in Oregon County MO. He married Helen Bartley in 1956 in Arkansas. They had 2 children.

Great-grandson, Bill M Adams was born to Oakley Noel and Allie Fay Grable on April 29, 1933. I found no entry that I can say is specifically about this person.

Granddaughter, 29 y/o Charlotta Adams d/o Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis married William Volney Grable ca 1936. They had one child. Mr. Grable died in 1937.

Great-grandson, Scotty Jim Grable was born to William V and Charlotta Adams on April 15, 1937 in Oregon County MO. No marriage found. A sister, Joan, is mentioned in his obituary but I found nothing further about her.

Granddaughter and widow, 31 y/o Charlotta Adams Grable d/o Oscar and Martha Jane (Jennie) McGinnis married Oliver M Williams on February 2, 1938.

Awarded the bronze star medal. He died on December 9, 2003 and is buried in the Hawthorne Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Jefferson City in Cole County MO.

Great-grandson, Charles D Butler (Rev) s/o Charles and Edna Novella McGinnis married Anna E Angier on May 7, 1949. Two children noted in Find-A-Grave entry #33418508. WWII Veteran. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity and a Masters of Theology at Southeast Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and served the Missouri Baptist Convention as a Minister.

  1. I am the great-great grandson of Oscar Lafayette Adams and Martha Jane McGinnis. My father was born after Claude Lafayette Adams. His name is Carl Gene Adams. I am enrolled in DNA Family Tree and find there is a significant connection along the Rodgers (Rogers) and Wallace line (possibly Scottish). I would be glad to share whatever might be of interest in developing the McGinnis family narrative. Best wishes in 2017.
